Overview

Serenity, soul and the sound of the river. Cradled by a curve in the river and fringed by forest, this lodge feels worlds away. The wildlife is present, the setting is peaceful, and the welcome is pure Tanzanian warmth.

Introduction

Tucked deep in the wild western Serengeti, far from the usual safari circuits, Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge offers front-row seats to one of nature’s quieter masterpieces. Positioned on a tributary of the Grumeti River, the lodge shares this space with resident hippo, roaming lion and the hush of a truly untamed landscape.

Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is in the thick of the region's tremendous wildlife action. Set in an emerald forest facing an oxbow lagoon of the Grumeti River – a favourite with playful hippos, as well as being the only place in the country where the thumbless, pied colobus monkey is found – the camp consists of only 10 suites, making for intimate interaction with nature.

During the annual Great Migration, the camp is perfectly positioned to witness the intense drama when thousands of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras cross the Grumeti River, home to Africa's largest and most powerful Nile crocodile. Beyond the Migration, Serengeti National Park is home to 35 species of plains game, including the Big 5, cheetahs and spotted hyenas, as well as raptors like Rüppell's and African white-backed vultures. The camp's resident hippo pods wallow in the lagoon and you will be able to hear their grunts and bellows from your bed or outdoor shower; you will also be able to get the classic ‘laughing hippo' and ‘hippo surfacing with water weed' photographs!

Accommodation

Ten luxuriously spacious and comfortable suites with king-sized beds line the riverside, positioned far enough apart for privacy and to take advantage of the marvellous views. Contemporary patterned ceilings cover the colourfully-decorated rooms that have large floor-to-ceiling windows to allow the view and natural light in.

Overhead fans keep you blissfully cool, and the en suite bathrooms feature a free-standing bath tub and an indoor shower. The private verandah provides the best spot to relax and take in the views. You also have a private plunge pool to enjoy a dip on warmer days.
